# Pause for human input

> Pause a run until a person chooses an option, then continue on the matching route.

export const DocMeta = ({type, applies, owner}) => {
  const LABELS = {
    tutorial: "Tutorial",
    "how-to": "How-to guide",
    explanation: "Explanation",
    reference: "Reference"
  };
  return <div className="e6-meta">
      <span className={type === "how-to" || type === "tutorial" ? "e6-eyebrow" : "e6-eyebrow e6-eyebrow--quiet"}>{LABELS[type] || type}</span>
      {applies ? <span>Applies to: {applies}</span> : null}
      {owner ? <span>Owner: {owner}</span> : null}
    </div>;
};

<DocMeta type="how-to" applies="All deployments" />

Use a `wait_for_input` step to pause a run for a decision that isn't an action approval.

## Add the step

Configure the step with:

* A prompt for the person.
* The allowed options.
* Routes for each choice, such as `on_approve`, `on_defer` and `on_reject`.

The run pauses and resumes from durable state after the person responds, so it can wait as long as needed.

## Input or approval?

| Use | When |
| - | - |
| `wait_for_input` | A person picks a direction for the run. |
| [Action approval](/agentflow/automate/actions-and-approvals) | A person approves the exact frozen plan of a side effect before it runs. |
