# Run a workflow

> Run a chosen workflow version, provide its inputs, follow the run and collect the artifacts.

export const DocMeta = ({type, applies, owner}) => {
  const LABELS = {
    tutorial: "Tutorial",
    "how-to": "How-to guide",
    explanation: "Explanation",
    reference: "Reference"
  };
  return <div className="e6-meta">
      <span className={type === "how-to" || type === "tutorial" ? "e6-eyebrow" : "e6-eyebrow e6-eyebrow--quiet"}>{LABELS[type] || type}</span>
      {applies ? <span>Applies to: {applies}</span> : null}
      {owner ? <span>Owner: {owner}</span> : null}
    </div>;
};

<DocMeta type="how-to" applies="All deployments" />

## Run it

1. On the workflow detail page, choose the version and select **Run**.
2. Complete the input dialog. See [Which inputs are required](#which-inputs-are-required).
3. Add attachments if the workflow accepts them.
4. Start the run.
5. Follow the step timeline, tool activity, outputs, human-input requests, errors and artifacts.
6. Stop the run if needed.
7. Review or download the final artifacts.

Direct runs are detached from your browser, so they keep going if you navigate away. The workflow version is recorded when the run starts.

## Which inputs are required

| Input definition | In the run dialog |
| - | - |
| Has a non-null default | Prefilled and optional |
| `required: false` | Optional |
| A bare type, no default, or a `null` default | Mandatory |

## Large results

Large intermediate results move between steps as references (`FileRef`, `S3PathRef` or `ArtifactRef`) instead of being copied into every step's context.

## Other ways to start a run

* From chat, with `/workflow`. See [Use chat](/agentflow/ask/chat#run-an-existing-workflow-from-chat).
* On a schedule. See [Schedule a workflow](/agentflow/automate/schedule).
* From an external event. See [Start workflows from webhooks](/agentflow/automate/webhooks).
