# Start workflows from webhooks

> Fire one or more workflows when an external system posts an event.

export const DocMeta = ({type, applies, owner}) => {
  const LABELS = {
    tutorial: "Tutorial",
    "how-to": "How-to guide",
    explanation: "Explanation",
    reference: "Reference"
  };
  return <div className="e6-meta">
      <span className={type === "how-to" || type === "tutorial" ? "e6-eyebrow" : "e6-eyebrow e6-eyebrow--quiet"}>{LABELS[type] || type}</span>
      {applies ? <span>Applies to: {applies}</span> : null}
      {owner ? <span>Owner: {owner}</span> : null}
    </div>;
};

<DocMeta type="how-to" applies="All deployments" />

A webhook trigger lets an external system start workflows by posting a JSON payload. For example:

* An ERP out-of-spec event starts a lot-investigation workflow.
* A CMMS ticket starts a downtime-correlation workflow.

## Create a webhook trigger

1. Create a `webhook` trigger.
2. Select one to ten workflows.
3. Map payload fields into workflow inputs.
4. Optionally configure debounce, to ignore identical payloads, and retry behavior.
5. Enable the trigger and copy the endpoint details.

## Authentication

The UI generates an HTTP Basic authorization value from an email and a personal access token. When central authentication is enabled, it takes precedence.

<Note>
  Operators: publish the exact webhook authentication contract for your environment, so the teams calling the webhook know which credential to send.
