# PostgreSQL protocol parameters

> Reference for connecting to e6data over the PostgreSQL wire protocol - host, port, database encoding, and SSL.

e6data speaks the PostgreSQL wire protocol on port `5432` (TLS), so a stock PostgreSQL client connects with no e6data driver. The routing is encoded in the database name. For setup, see [PostgreSQL protocol](/query/connect/postgresql-protocol).

## Connection parameters

| Parameter | Value |
| - | - |
| Host | `<PG_HOST>` (from **Cluster → Connectivity**) |
| Port | `5432` |
| Database | `<CLUSTER>/<CATALOG>` - the cluster and catalog, slash-separated |
| User | your e6data email |
| Password | a [personal access token](/platform/tokens/pat-and-service-account-keys) |
| `sslmode` | `require` |

## Connection-string forms

```bash theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light","dark":"github-dark"}}
# psql
psql "host=<PG_HOST> port=5432 dbname=<CLUSTER>/<CATALOG> user=<EMAIL> sslmode=require"
```

```
# PostgreSQL JDBC driver
jdbc:postgresql://<PG_HOST>:5432/<CLUSTER>/<CATALOG>?user=<EMAIL>&sslmode=require
```

## Behavior

* **Suspended cluster:** the first connection returns SQLSTATE `57P03` ("cluster is being resumed, please retry"); standard drivers retry automatically while the cluster resumes (\~30–90 s).
* **Idle timeout:** PostgreSQL sessions have a 1-hour idle timeout by default.
