# Get started with Query Engine

> The path from a new account to SQL results in your own tools, with a link to the right guide at every step.

export const Outcome = ({children}) => <div className="e6-outcome">
    <span className="e6-outcome-label">When you finish</span>
    <div className="e6-outcome-body">{children}</div>
  </div>;

<Outcome>You have a workspace, a registered catalog and a running cluster, and you've queried your tables from the console and from your own tools.</Outcome>

Some steps happen in [Platform](/platform), because workspaces, identity and tokens are shared by every e6data product. You only do them once.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Sign up and set up your organization">
    Create your account with a passwordless email code or SSO, then invite your team.

    [Sign up and log in](/platform/sign-up-and-log-in) · [Set up your organization](/platform/organization-setup)
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose a deployment model and deploy a workspace">
    Serverless runs the compute for you. CloudPrem runs it inside your own AWS or Azure account.

  </Step>

  <Step title="Register the catalog your tables are in">
    Query Engine reads tables where they already live. Connect AWS Glue, Hive Metastore, Unity Catalog, Apache Polaris, an Iceberg REST catalog, S3 Tables or Microsoft Fabric.

  </Step>

  <Step title="Create a cluster">
    Pick a size, and let auto-suspend and auto-resume keep costs down when nobody is querying.

    [Create and manage clusters](/query/clusters/create-and-manage) · [Sizing and scaling](/query/clusters/sizing-and-scaling)
  </Step>

  <Step title="Run your first query">
    Open the Query Editor, choose the cluster and catalog, and run SQL.

  </Step>

  <Step title="Query from your own tools">
    Connect Python, JDBC, the PostgreSQL protocol, BI tools and notebooks to the same cluster.

## Self-managed

A guide for running Query Engine on infrastructure you manage yourself is on the way. See [Install self-managed](/query/get-started/self-managed).
