# CURRENT_TIMEZONE

> Returns the session timezone string, using UTC when unset.

Returns a non-NULL timezone string; unset configuration returns UTC.

## Syntax

### Scalar

```sql theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light","dark":"github-dark"}}
current_timezone()
```

## Arguments

Takes no arguments.

## Returns

* Type: STRING
* NULL behavior: Returns a non-NULL timezone string; unset configuration returns UTC.

## Properties

## Usage notes

* CURRENT\_TIMEZONE returns the configured value verbatim; it does not validate or normalize spelling.
* Deterministic: The result can change with session settings or execution time, but stays constant within one query.

### Unconfigured session

* Session execution.time\_zone is unset.

```sql theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light","dark":"github-dark"}}
SELECT current_timezone() AS result;
```
