# FROM_UTC_TIMESTAMP

> Converts UTC wall time to the requested local wall time.

<div className="e6-meta"><span className="e6-eyebrow e6-eyebrow--quiet">Scalar function</span></div>

NULL timestamp with a valid timezone yields NULL. NULL timezone yields NULL. A non-NULL invalid timezone raises an error and can be validated even when the timestamp is NULL.

## Syntax

### Scalar

```sql theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light","dark":"github-dark"}}
from_utc_timestamp(value, timezone)
```

## Arguments

| Name | Type | Required | Description |
| - | - | - | - |
| value | TIMESTAMP | Yes | Instant/wall-clock value. Use timestamps with microsecond precision. Time-zone offset lookups for negative fractional seconds before the Unix epoch are outside this form. |
| timezone | STRING constant | Yes | Source or target timezone. Valid IANA zone or fixed UTC offset. The time zone cannot vary by row in this form. Must be a constant argument. |

## Returns

* Type: TIMESTAMP without a time zone
* NULL behavior: NULL timestamp with a valid timezone yields NULL. NULL timezone yields NULL. A non-NULL invalid timezone raises an error and can be validated even when the timestamp is NULL.

## Properties

| Property | Value |
| - | - |
| Deterministic | Yes |
| Exact result | Yes |

## Usage notes

* The function changes the clock time and returns a TIMESTAMP without a time zone.
* The time zone can be a constant or a column with a different time zone for each row.
* The function looks up the zone’s offset at the input treated as a UTC instant, then adds that offset. For local times repeated or skipped by daylight-saving changes, this can differ from MAKE\_TIMESTAMP or CONVERT\_TIMEZONE.

## Examples

### Basic example

```sql theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light","dark":"github-dark"}}
SELECT from_utc_timestamp(TIMESTAMP '2024-01-01 00:00:00','Asia/Seoul') AS result;
```

| result |
| - |
| 2024-01-01 09:00:00 |

### Convert UTC to a local time on the next day

```sql theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light","dark":"github-dark"}}
SELECT from_utc_timestamp(TIMESTAMP '2024-01-01 20:00:00', 'Asia/Kolkata') AS local_time;
```

| local\_time |
| - |
| 2024-01-02 01:30:00 |

## Limitations

* For a timestamp before 1970-01-01 00:00:00 UTC with fractional seconds, a time-zone offset near a historical clock change can be incorrect. Avoid that combination.
