# MAKE_DATE

> Constructs a date from year, month and day.

<div className="e6-meta"><span className="e6-eyebrow e6-eyebrow--quiet">Scalar function</span></div>

NULL components yield NULL. Default-dialect invalid calendar parts yield NULL. Snowflake out-of-range parts normalize additively; unrepresentable results yield NULL.

## Syntax

### Scalar

```sql theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light","dark":"github-dark"}}
make_date(year, month, day)
```

## Arguments

| Name | Type | Required | Description |
| - | - | - | - |
| year | INTEGER | Yes | Calendar year. |
| month | INTEGER | Yes | Calendar month; normalization depends on dialect. |
| day | INTEGER | Yes | Calendar day; normalization depends on dialect. |

## Returns

* Type: DATE
* NULL behavior: NULL components yield NULL. Default-dialect invalid calendar parts yield NULL. Snowflake out-of-range parts normalize additively; unrepresentable results yield NULL.

## Properties

| Property | Value |
| - | - |
| Deterministic | Yes |
| Exact result | Yes |

## Examples

### Leap day

* Use default/non-Snowflake MAKE\_DATE semantics; Snowflake MAKE\_DATE uses DATE\_FROM\_PARTS calendar rollover instead.

```sql theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light","dark":"github-dark"}}
SELECT make_date(2024, 2, 29) AS result;
```

| result |
| - |
| 2024-02-29 |

### Invalid default-dialect date

* Use default/non-Snowflake MAKE\_DATE semantics; Snowflake MAKE\_DATE uses DATE\_FROM\_PARTS calendar rollover instead.

```sql theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light","dark":"github-dark"}}
SELECT make_date(2023, 2, 29) AS result;
```

| result |
| - |
| NULL |

## Limitations

* Dialect selects MAKE\_DATE or MAKE\_DATE\_SF; the same spelling therefore has different invalid-part behavior.
* Use MAKE\_DATE. DATE\_FROM\_PARTS is not an established SQL alias.
