# CRC32

> Returns the CRC-32 checksum of a string or binary value.

NULL input returns NULL. Strings are checked as UTF-8 bytes.

## Syntax

### Bytes (scalar)

```sql theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light","dark":"github-dark"}}
crc32(value)
```

## Arguments

| Name | Type | Required | Description |
| - | - | - | - |
| value | STRING or BINARY | Yes | Data whose CRC-32 checksum is computed. |

## Returns

* Type: BIGINT
* Possible values: 0 through 4294967295, representing an unsigned 32-bit checksum.
* NULL behavior: NULL input returns NULL. Strings are checked as UTF-8 bytes.

## Usage notes

* STRING values are converted to UTF-8 bytes. BINARY values are checked as their raw bytes.

## Examples

### Basic checksum

```sql theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light","dark":"github-dark"}}
SELECT crc32('abc') AS result;
```

### Empty input and NULL

```sql theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light","dark":"github-dark"}}
SELECT crc32('') AS empty_value, crc32(CAST(NULL AS VARCHAR)) AS null_value;
```

| 0 | NULL |

### Binary input

```sql theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light","dark":"github-dark"}}
SELECT crc32(X'616263') AS result;
```
