# ILIKE

> Tests whether a string matches a SQL wildcard pattern without case sensitivity.

NULL value or pattern returns NULL.

## Syntax

### Scalar

```sql theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light","dark":"github-dark"}}
value ILIKE pattern [ESCAPE escape]
```

## Arguments

| Name | Type | Required | Description |
| - | - | - | - |
| value | STRING | Yes | String to match. |
| pattern | STRING | Yes | Pattern containing % and \_ wildcards. |
| escape | one-character STRING literal | No | Optional escape character. Must be a constant argument. Default: Backslash when no ESCAPE clause is supplied. |

## Returns

* Type: BOOLEAN
* NULL behavior: NULL value or pattern returns NULL.

## Usage notes

* % matches zero or more characters; \_ matches one character.
* NOT ILIKE is a negated comparison form.
* Deterministic: The same inputs and settings produce the same result.

## Examples

### Typical behavior

```sql theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light","dark":"github-dark"}}
SELECT 'Hello' ILIKE 'h%' AS "value";
```

### Case-insensitive single-character wildcards

```sql theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light","dark":"github-dark"}}
SELECT 'CAT' ILIKE 'c_t' AS matched, 'CART' ILIKE 'c_t' AS not_matched;
```

| - | - |
| true | false |

## Limitations

* A custom escape must be a one-character STRING literal. When supplying a custom escape, the pattern must also be a literal.
