# Storage root

> storage_root

ReferenceApplies to: Unified engine deployments

`storage_root`

Set one root for all Unified durable state. A config file must include this field.

```toml theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light","dark":"github-dark"}}
storage_root = "s3://YOUR_BUCKET/unified/"
```

A local directory or `file://` URL is also supported. A bare local launch uses the application's data directory. Metadata, table files, results, telemetry history, and the secret key use fixed paths below the root.

Separate backend and location fields are rejected. Changing the root does not move data. See [storage layout and access](https://docs.e6data.com/transformation/operations/configuration/storage.md).
