# Worker connections

> workers.runtime.connection

ReferenceApplies to: Unified engine deployments

`[workers.runtime.connection]`

## Settings

### `max_in_flight`

Limits how many worker-control requests can be waiting for replies on one connection.

* **Default:** `64`
* **Type:** integer; positive

> **Example**
>
> `64` allows up to 64 unfinished requests on that connection. This controls requests such as task assignment, not the number of SQL rows returned.

### `max_message_bytes`

Limits the size of one request or reply sent over a worker-control connection.

* **Default:** `68157440`
* **Type:** integer (bytes); positive

> **Example**
>
> `68157440` allows a control message up to 65 MiB. A task assignment must fit this limit even if the worker has enough memory to execute it.

### `response_timeout`

Sets how long the caller waits for a reply to a worker-control request.

* **Default:** `30 s`
* **Type:** duration

> **Example**
>
> `{ secs = 30, nanos = 0 }` allows 30 seconds for the control reply. A query may keep running after this wait ends; its execution deadline is a separate setting.
