# PostgreSQL protocol parameters

Reference for connecting to e6data over the PostgreSQL wire protocol - host, port, database encoding, and SSL.

e6data speaks the PostgreSQL wire protocol on port `5432` (TLS), so a stock PostgreSQL client connects with no e6data driver. The routing is encoded in the database name. For setup, see [PostgreSQL protocol](/query-engine/developers/connecting-to-the-engine/postgresql-protocol.md).

## Connection parameters

## Behavior

* **Suspended cluster:** the first connection returns SQLSTATE `57P03` ("cluster is being resumed, please retry"); standard drivers retry automatically while the cluster resumes (\~30–90 s).
* **Idle timeout:** PostgreSQL sessions have a 1-hour idle timeout by default.
